Hornets Vs Lakers

Hornets Vs Lakers

Introduction

The Spectrum Center in Charlotte was host to the thrilling contest between the two teams that went to battle on 20th February – Charlotte Hornets and Los Angeles Lakers. Both teams had different stakes riding this game; while the Lakers were incredibly keen on raising their playoff position in an extremely competitive Western Conference, the Hornets were out to show some potential and toughness against a well-established opponent.

The added spice to this contest also came from the veteran superstars and rising guns in the game. The Corps of LeBron James and Anthony Davis wanted to outdo the Hornets’ high-paced young core with LaMelo Ball and Brandon Miller leading the charge. Both the teams shone brilliantly at various points throughout the season so fans were really thrilled to wait and see what transpired on the court.

    Team Lineups & Critical Players

      Los Angeles Lakers Starting Five:

LeBron James (SF) – 25.2 ppg, 7.5 RPG, 7.1 APG

      Anthony Davis (PF/C) – 24.0 ppg, 12.1 RPG, 2.6 big

      D’Angelo Russell (PG) – 17.4 ppg, 6.3 apg

Austin Reaves (SG) – 15.1 ppg, 4.8 apg

Rui Hachimura (PF) – 13.0 ppg, 5.4 rpg

      Charlotte Hornets Starting Five:

LaMelo Ball (PG) – 22.1 ppg, 8.7 APG, 6.2 RPG

Brandon Miller (SF) – 16.9 ppg, 4.6 rpgMiles Bridges (PF) – Averages: 18.3 PPG, 7.1 RPG

      Mark Williams (C) – Averages: 11.5 PPG, 9.8 RPG

Terry Rozier (SG) – Averages: 19.2 PPG, 5.3 APG

Key injuries going into the game would affect both teams. The Lakers had been managing nagging injuries to their bench unit, while the Hornets were short in key depth players, putting a lot of pressure on their starters to run heavy minutes.

      First Half Breakdown

The game started fast. Both had exchanges of baskets in the first fast-paced quarter, before continuing to early action highlights. The Lakers emphasized inside early, bringing the ball to Anthony Davis in the post with Charlotte’s smaller front line. Davis joined the scoring, exploiting the size deficiency to quickly tally 10 points in the first quarter.

On one hand, the speed and three-pointers were Eagle-Acting against the Hornets. LaMelo Ball really ran an offense masterfully, got teammates open looks, and also knocked down a pair of three-pointers from both ends of the court. Early on, Brandon Miller was also successful, hitting mid-range shots and displaying confidence against top-tier defense.

In the second quarter, the Lakers would tighten up their defense further. LeBron James took charge as a facilitator offense and scored really well in transition. All of his great court vision was on display as he gave some important buckets to keep the Lakers leading. Nonetheless, strong three-point shots by Rozier and Bridges kept the Hornets in striking distance. At the end of naif time, the score read: Lakers 57 – 51.

The Second Half and Clutch Moments

As the second half began, the Hornets worked a nasty attack. Miles Bridges and Mark Williams worked some strong defense by denying Anthony Davis touches and generating turnovers.LaMelo Ball pushed his offensive momentum forward, taking the ball to the paint to find Rozier for some open looks. Accordingly, a fast 10-2 run by the Hornets opened the third quarter as they were down a point.

The Lakers retaliated calmly and confidently, as champions do. LeBron took charge, going strong to the iron and making tough and-one plays. Austin Reaves hit some timely outside shots that made the Hornets respect the perimeter and keep from clogging the paint.

The fourth quarter would be a battle of willpower. With five minutes slightly under five minutes remaining, Bridges threw down a highlight type of dunk, tying the game up with a score of 94-94. As he has on a million occasions, LeBron James turned the heat on. He dropped a deep three with two minutes remaining and followed that with an aggressive drive finished with contact, putting the Lakers in the lead.

The Hornets made their final push with another dagger three from Rozier, but the Lakers closed it out at the line to take the game, 112-106, on a battle-tested win.

LaMelo Ball 24 points, 12 assists, 6 rebounds.

Miles Bridges had 21 points and 8 rebounds.

Terry Rozier: 20 points, 5 assists

            Key Team Stats:

Field Goal Percentage: Lakers 49%-Hornets 46%

            Three-Point Percentage: Lakers 38%-Hornets 35%

            Rebounds: Lakers 55-Hornets 47

            Turnovers: Lakers 12-Hornets 15

            1. Key Takeaways and Analysis

Lakers’ Experience Showed: It is at clutch moments that the Lakers’ ability to execute under pressure made the difference.

Hornets’ Growth: Charlotte showed significant resilience, but their late-game execution is an issue that continues to plague them.

Clutch Factor of LeBron: Once again, he delivered in almost all the biggest moments, proving why he is and remains one of the best closers in the game.

Hornets’ Need for Defensive Growth: Simply put, they could not defend Davis and James in the crucial possessions, which cost them dearly.

Fan Reactions and Social Media Buzz

Very contentious was the game on the social networks. Laker fans were all tweeting things like, “LeBron still owns the clutch moments! just reliving some of his heroics.” Hornets fans had it mixed up: some would applaud the fight shown by the great team; some were not shy to criticize the poor-construct late-game defense.

A going meme showed LaMelo in utter frustration trying to defend LeBron, in the caption: “How do you stop a guy who’s done this for 20 years?”

              Conclusion of Hornets Vs Lakers

The victory by the Lakers makes them even firmer steeled within playoff standings, making them still dangerous within that playoff race. The Hornets are still a growing team but this inconsistency about finishing the game is something they have not yet mended.

There is plenty for both teams to take from this game as the season goes on. Will this momentum carry forward for the Lakers? Will the Hornets learn from these mistakes and seal the deal in their next games? See more
